WhatsApp Coexistence Explained: What it Fixes, and What it Quietly Breaks (2026)
Meta's new coexistence feature allows the WhatsApp Business app and Cloud API to share a single number. We break down the technical trade-offs, from group chat loss to template pricing mechanics.

WhatsApp coexistence is a feature that allows a single phone number to operate simultaneously on both the official WhatsApp Business app and the Cloud API with two-way sync. By scanning a QR code, businesses keep their mobile chat history and app access while connecting to third-party automation tools or CRM dashboards for scaling operations.

The Problem Coexistence Was Built to Solve
Until recently, Indian SMEs faced a binary choice. You could use the free WhatsApp Business app for its ease of use and group support, or you could migrate to the Official API (via providers like Wati, AiSensy, or Interakt) to send bulk broadcasts. Migration was a one-way street: moving to the API meant losing your chat history and being permanently locked out of the mobile app on your phone.
For a Chandigarh silver-jewellery retailer, this was a dealbreaker. They needed the mobile app to snap and send photos of new stock, but they also needed API-level automation to handle the surge of Click-to-WhatsApp (CTWA) leads. Coexistence, officially titled "API Solutions for Business App Users," removes this friction. It allows you to stay on the app while your automation partner reads and replies to messages via the API.
However, this hybrid state is not a perfect mirror. While it solves the identity problem, it introduces new structural constraints that can break a high-volume sales workflow if not managed carefully.
What Quietly Breaks During Coexistence Setup?
The moment you enable coexistence, Meta imposes several technical restrictions to maintain the sync between the app and the API. The most immediate change is to your linked devices. Any existing linked devices (like WhatsApp Web on a laptop) are unlinked by default. While you can re-link them, only specific clients like WhatsApp for Windows are supported; notably, WearOS and certain third-party companion apps will not trigger API webhooks, meaning messages sent from those devices may not show up in your automation dashboard.
Group chats are the second major casualty. While standard numbers on the API cannot join or message groups at all, coexistence allows groups to remain on the mobile app, but they do not sync with the API. Your automation tool will be completely blind to group activity. If your business relies on WhatsApp groups for coordination, those conversations will remain "dark" to your CRM.
Furthermore, several privacy features are disabled in individual chats during coexistence:
- Disappearing messages cannot be turned on.
- View-once media is unsupported.
- Live location sharing is disabled.
- The "Official Business Account" (Green Tick) cannot be obtained while in coexistence mode; you are limited to standard Meta Verified status.
The Financial Reality: 24-Hour Windows and Template Pricing
A common misconception is that coexistence makes API messaging free. It does not. The Cloud API's billing rules apply to every message sent through your automation tool, regardless of whether you have the app open on your phone.
Meta's 24-hour customer service window remains the central mechanic: you can reply for free within 24 hours of the lead's last message. Outside this window, you must use pre-approved templates. In India, marketing templates cost roughly ₹0.95–1.09 per message.
Consider this calculation: If you have 500 leads who went cold, and you send a marketing template follow-up to all of them, your cost is approximately 500 × ₹1.00 = ₹500. Under the new rules effective October 1, 2026, even service (support) messages become billable per message, ending the era of free support conversations via the API.
Messages you manually type and send from the WhatsApp Business app itself remain free, but they do not reset the API's 24-hour window for automation purposes. This creates a "split-brain" pricing model where the physical phone is free, but the software layer is metered.
When an API Tool is Actually the Better Choice?
Despite the drawbacks, coexistence is the superior choice for businesses that need the best of both worlds: bulk broadcasting and a mobile interface. If you are using Wati, AiSensy, or Interakt, coexistence allows you to use their CRM dashboards and broadcast engines while keeping your staff on their phones.
These platforms are excellent at managing product catalogs and sending massive marketing blasts to thousands of numbers. However, they are still bound by Meta's template rules. If a lead doesn't reply within 24 hours, these tools cannot send a custom AI-written follow-up; they can only send a generic, pre-approved template. For high-intent sales where the median purchase happens within an hour of the first message, these rigid templates often fail to keep the conversation alive.
Does WhatsApp Coexistence Fix the Follow-Up Problem?
Coexistence fixes the "where do I log in?" problem, but it does not fix the lead-response problem. According to the 2007 MIT/Oldroyd study, the odds of qualifying a lead are 21x higher if contacted within 5 minutes versus 30 minutes. If your team is using the Business app via coexistence but only checking it every few hours, you are still losing leads.
In our anonymised deployments for a Bengaluru tour operator, we found that leads often arrive with ambiguous questions or jump ahead in the sales process. An API-based broadcast tool might send a generic template, but it cannot handle "colloquial headcount arithmetic" (e.g., a lead saying "Couple and one kid") without complex manual intervention.
Loop2 takes a different approach. Rather than using the API or coexistence, loop2 acts as a linked device on your existing number. This allows it to send free-form, AI-generated messages without template restrictions and without the 24-hour window limitation. It handles the qualify-log-handover flow automatically, ensuring no lead waits more than a few seconds for a response.
FAQ
Can I use WhatsApp groups while using coexistence?
Groups will continue to work on your mobile phone's WhatsApp Business app, but they will not sync to your API provider's dashboard. Any messages sent or received in groups are invisible to your automation tools.
Do I still have to pay for templates if I have the app open?
Yes. Any message sent via the API (automation, broadcasts, or chatbot replies) is billed at Meta's standard rates, such as ₹0.95–1.09 for marketing templates in India. Only messages manually typed and sent from the mobile app are free.
What happens if I don't open the WhatsApp app for two weeks?
If the WhatsApp Business app is not opened on the primary device at least once every 14 days, Meta will drop the coexistence connection, and your API automation will stop working until you re-authenticate.
Can I get the Green Tick while using coexistence?
No. Official Business Account (OBA) status is currently not supported for numbers using coexistence. You can, however, apply for Meta Verified for the Business app to get a verified badge, though this is distinct from the API Green Tick.
Does coexistence support 'View Once' photos?
No. Enabling coexistence disables View Once media and disappearing messages for all individual chats on that number, as these features are incompatible with the API sync requirements.
WhatsApp coexistence is a powerful bridge for SMEs, but the trade-offs in group functionality and privacy features mean it isn't a universal upgrade for every sales team. For businesses focused strictly on inbound response and persistent follow-up without template costs, staying on a linked-device model may be more efficient than bridging to the API.
