Wati pricing in India (2026): per-message billing and what a 5-person team really pays

Wati now bills per delivered template, not per 24-hour conversation. Here is the honest 2026 cost breakdown for an Indian 5-person team — with real rupee maths, markups and the Oct 2026 change coming to service messages.

Published July 12, 2026· Updated Aug 30, 2026

A 5-person team in India should budget roughly ₹7,300–₹10,000 a month for Wati: a platform subscription of about ₹2,500–₹5,000 plus per-message template charges. Since 1 July 2025 Meta bills every delivered template individually — not per 24-hour conversation — so your bill now scales directly with follow-up volume.

Wati runs on the official WhatsApp Business API, so its mechanics are Meta's mechanics. The platform fee is the small, predictable half of the bill. The variable half — templates — is where Indian SMEs get surprised, and the billing model underneath it changed twice in eighteen months. If you are comparing vendors, read this next to what AiSensy actually costs in India and Interakt's real cost breakdown — the platform fees differ, the Meta layer does not.

What changed: conversation billing → per-message billing (July 2025)

Meta stopped charging per 24-hour conversation on 1 July 2025 and started charging per delivered template message, priced by template category and by the recipient's country calling code. One conversation that used to be a single bundled charge can now be three or four separate charges. Every pre-2025 Wati cost estimate you read online is therefore obsolete.

Under the old model, a marketing conversation in India cost roughly ₹0.88 and covered 24 hours of back-and-forth. Under the current model, each delivered marketing template is billed on its own. Free-form (non-template) replies inside an open customer service window remain free, and utility templates sent in response to a user inside that window are free too.

There is one genuine discount worth planning around: a click-to-WhatsApp ad opens a 72-hour free entry point window in which everything you send, templates included, is free. If most of your volume is CTWA lead response, your real template spend is far lower than a broadcast-heavy business's.

The numbers worth quoting

  • 1 July 2025 — Meta switched the WhatsApp Business Platform from per-conversation to per-message billing; only delivered templates are charged — Meta for Developers, "Pricing on the WhatsApp Business Platform"
  • ₹0.7846 per marketing template · ₹0.1150 per utility template — India rates on Meta's INR rate card effective 1 July 2025 (verify against Meta's current card before budgeting)
  • ~20% typical BSP markup over Meta's base template rate; ~257% reported markup on authentication templates by some Indian BSPs — published BSP rate cards vs Meta's INR card, 2025–2026
  • 1 October 2026 — Meta's announced change billing service messages per message, ending the free 24-hour service window — Meta for Developers pricing updates notice, 2026
  • 72 hours free — click-to-WhatsApp free entry point window, all message types included — Meta for Developers pricing documentation

The Oct 1, 2026 change: the free service window ends

Meta has announced that from 1 October 2026 service messages will be billed per message, ending the free 24-hour customer service window that every API tool's pricing page currently leans on. This makes out-of-window follow-up more expensive on all API tools — Wati, AiSensy and Interakt alike — because the free part of the conversation stops being free.

Be honest about what this does and does not mean. It does not make the API a bad product; support-heavy businesses will still find it cheaper than staffing. But it does remove the "replies are free, you only pay for marketing" line from every BSP sales deck, and it changes the arithmetic for teams whose volume is mostly conversation rather than broadcast.

If most of your spend is a human answering enquiries, model your 2027 budget with a per-message cost on those replies too. The architecture trade-off behind that — API versus your own number — is spelled out in the WhatsApp Business API vs linked-device explainer.

The 24-hour window, in plain terms

Under Meta's rules you can reply free-form only within 24 hours of the customer's last message. At 24 hours and one minute, "Hey, still interested?" is no longer allowed as a plain message — it has to be a pre-approved template, and that template is billed.

That single rule is what turns a sales follow-up sequence into a line item. Chasing 1,000 silent leads three times is 3,000 billed templates, and Meta also applies per-user frequency caps on marketing templates, so aggressive sequences risk template pausing on top of the cost.

Breaking down a 5-person team's monthly bill

Three components, in order of predictability:

  1. Platform fee — Wati's subscription for the shared inbox, mobile app and automation builder, typically ₹2,500–₹5,000/month on annualised Growth or Pro plans.
  2. Meta message costs — per delivered template, by category, passed through to you.
  3. Markup and add-ons — the BSP's margin over Meta's rate, plus charges for seats beyond the plan's included agents.

Worked example at current rates (5,000 marketing + 500 utility templates)

Line itemCalculationMonthly (INR)
Platform subscriptionGrowth/Pro, annualised₹2,500 – ₹5,000
Marketing templates (Meta base)5,000 × ₹0.7846₹3,923
Same, with ~20% BSP markup5,000 × ~₹0.94₹4,708
Utility templates500 × ~₹0.138 (marked up)₹69
Authentication templates (if used)1,000 × ~₹0.44 at reported markup₹440
Realistic totalplatform + messages, ex-GST₹7,300 – ₹10,200

Two honest caveats. If a large share of your volume arrives through CTWA ads, much of it lands inside the free 72-hour window and your template line drops sharply. And if you send genuine bulk broadcasts — 50,000 messages for a Diwali sale — this table understates your bill by an order of magnitude; that is broadcast economics, not a Wati problem.

What Wati and the other API tools genuinely do well

Bulk broadcast and catalogue are the API's home turf. Interactive buttons, list menus, catalogue browsing, ticket-style support routing and analytics across a 5-agent desk are all things the API does properly and a linked-device tool does not. If your weekly rhythm is a promotional blast to a large opted-in list, you need an API tool, and the ~20% markup buys you a managed sending pipeline.

The structural costs are real too: you cannot join or message WhatsApp groups once a number is on the API, you lose the standard app on your phone for that number, and migrating an existing number does not carry your chat history across. Those constraints, not the price, are what sends most small teams looking at honest Wati alternatives compared.

Where the money actually leaks: follow-up

For a sales desk, the platform fee is not the drain — the follow-up is. Speed and persistence decide conversion, and the API prices both. Every touch after hour 24 is a paid template, and every extra touch raises the odds Meta pauses that template for frequency.

The GoKwik WhatsApp Commerce Intelligence Report 2026 puts automated journeys at 11.1% CTR against 2.6% for broadcast campaigns. That gap is the argument for spending on response, not reach — the same conclusion reached in AiSensy vs Wati for Meta Ads traffic.

loop2 sits on the other side of that trade: it links to your existing number as an inbound lead-response and follow-up agent, so there is no template fee and no 24-hour lock — and equally, no broadcast engine and no catalogue. Different job, different tool.

Who should still pick Wati

Choose Wati if you send bulk promotional broadcasts to a large list, need a catalogue inside the chat, run a support desk where ticket routing matters, and are comfortable paying per template for business-initiated messages. That is a legitimate, common set of requirements and Wati serves it well.

Choose differently if your entire problem is that ad leads sit unanswered for two hours, your sales flow lives in WhatsApp groups, or your chat history is your CRM. In that case the API's template economics tax the exact activity you are trying to scale.

Takeaway: Wati's platform fee is the small number. Since July 2025 you pay per delivered template — about ₹0.78 marketing and ₹0.12 utility at Meta's India rates, plus roughly 20% BSP markup — and from 1 October 2026 service messages start billing too. Budget for the messages, not the subscription.

Quick answers

Can I follow up on WhatsApp after 24 hours without a template?+
On the official WhatsApp Business API (like Wati), no. You must use a Meta-approved template and pay the per-message marketing fee. However, if you use your standard Business app with a tool like loop2, you can follow up with free-form messages at any time.
What is the difference between service and marketing messages in Wati?+
Service messages are free-form replies sent within 24 hours of a customer’s message. Marketing messages are templates you initiate (like broadcasts or follow-ups after 24h) which cost roughly ₹0.95–1.09 per message in India as of 2026.
Does Wati support WhatsApp groups?+
No. Official WhatsApp Business API numbers cannot join, create, or message in WhatsApp groups. If your sales process relies on groups, you must stay on the standard WhatsApp Business app.
Do I need Meta Business Verification to use Wati?+
You can start without it, but you will be capped at 250 business-initiated conversations per day. To scale beyond this, you must complete Meta Business Verification with legal company documents.
How much does a marketing message cost in India?+
As of early 2026, Meta charges approximately ₹0.95 to ₹1.09 for a single marketing template message in India. This is in addition to any platform fees you pay to a provider like Wati.
Did Wati and WhatsApp pricing change in 2025?+
Yes. From 1 July 2025 Meta bills per delivered template message — priced by template category and recipient country — instead of per 24-hour conversation. Free-form replies inside an open customer service window are still free today, and utility templates sent in response to a user inside that window are free too.
What is changing on 1 October 2026 for WhatsApp API pricing?+
Meta has announced that service messages will be billed per message from 1 October 2026, ending the free 24-hour customer service window. Out-of-window and in-window follow-ups both become chargeable, which raises running costs on every official API tool — Wati, AiSensy and Interakt included.
How much does a Wati template message cost in India?+
At Meta's INR rates effective July 2025, a marketing template is about ₹0.7846 and a utility template about ₹0.1150 per delivered message. BSPs typically add around 20% on top, and reported markups on authentication templates run as high as ~257%. Verify against your provider's current rate card.
What does a 5-person team actually pay for Wati per month in India?+
Roughly ₹7,300–₹10,200 excluding GST: about ₹2,500–₹5,000 platform subscription plus per-message template charges — for example 5,000 marketing templates at roughly ₹0.94 marked up is about ₹4,708. Heavy click-to-WhatsApp traffic lowers this because those chats have a free 72-hour window.
